orn June 24th 1950 Peter David Mullin of Plainfield, NJ., took on the stage name Monroe Mullin in honor of the late Bill Monroe, father of bluegrass music in 2000. Even though Monroe's music is not in the style of bluegrass, because he is a singer/songwriter writing in a lot of different styles, he revered Bill Monroe as a lifelong artist dedicated to his music till the day he died.
Monroe has recorded over 35 songs and counting in Nashville, TN with the gifted and talented singer songwriter/ producer Clay Mills and has had some incredible musicians on his songs.
Monroe was a late bloomer. Living in California from 1975-1980 is when he began his musical and song writing journey. At the age of 29 years old he bought his first guitar. He was living in Marin county and began hanging around a lot of musicians. He began singing with a couple of garage bands and actually opened up for some band out of L.A. at a John Anderson presidential rally in San Francisco in 1978. Little did he know at the time he would move back to NJ in 1980 and then in 1983 to Florida where he cut his first songs next to the Banjo Shop in Hollywood Florida with some great southern rock and country musicians. He bought his second guitarat the Banjo Shop, a black smoked Takamine acoustic cutaway which he has had since 1983 and which he has written over 200 songs on and counting to date.
At this point he had only been playing for 5 years and was already making demos and recording songs. In 1985 after spending 2 years in Florida he moved back to NJ. Around that time, he met Steve Clarke, another singer, musician and songwriter. Steve had a lot of interest in producing music.
In 1996 Monroe got married and moved to Nashville and met Clay Mills, an up and coming songwriter producer. Monroe having his first experience recording in Nashville, got hooked.
After producing a number of songs, Monroe became a little disenchanted and moved back to N.J, but continued to produce songs with Clay when he was in Nashville. In 1998 Monroe and Steve would hook up again. Monroe asked Steve to help him finish some songs he was stuck on. And there began the collaborative team of Clarkesville Station.
They started writing and producing songs in Nashville, TN. At that point Steve expressed a desire to produce some of the music in his studio. Steve had been honing his production skills for more than 10 years.
"I can’t say enough about {Smilin} Steve Clarke. He’s one of my best friends and a musical genius”. Says Monroe. Although they love producing songs in Nashville, Steve and Monroe get the opportunity to experiment and stretch their musical boundaries when Steve’s producing. Monroe and Steve are have released their second CD, Place in the Sun. Monroe and Steve are both affiliated with BMI and Monroe has his own publishing company Mulano Publishing.
Right now you can see and hear them on Myspace at Clarkesvillestation. They don’t have a band. At this point they are songwriters interested in selling their CD to interested listeners and other artist that may be interested in doing one of their songs.
They like doing open mics locally and depending on how much interest they get with their music would consider touring. The Clarkesville Station experience has begun. |
